Yucky Mummy is the antithesis of the post-Supermum Yummy Mummy. Read about ‘real’ parenting where the only rule that applies is “whatever works”.

Little Lucy is enjoying her first year and school and her Mum, Yucky Mummy contributor Melissa Loughlin, doesn’t think it’s half back either.
Well, we are already half way through Term 2 of Lucy’s Kindergarten year, and I have to say, I am very proud of my eldest daughter! She has adjusted so well to school life. It feels like she’s been there forever.
She is loving school, has heaps of friends (both boys and girls) and according to her teacher, is one of the most popular kids in the class (of course!) Read the rest of this entry »

Yucky Mummy contributor Leisa Chell just wants to tune out and read a good book when she gets her hair done. But it’s not going to happen.
I hate hairdressers: a rather harsh fact, but one that seems to be cemented in my psyche. Every appointment is like Groundhog Day. I walk into the funky salon, within the funky suburb of Sydney’s Surry Hills. The ambience is great – gorgeous (albeit gay) men to massage my head, and an interior design that wouldn’t look out of place in the pages of Vogue Living. Ahhhh, stylish and posh, just the pampering I deserve. Read the rest of this entry »

My big four-oh has come and gone. And to tell you the truth, I was so busy and had such a great party, I haven’t really given the milestone itself much thought. This ‘coming of age’ certainly hasn’t depressed me. In fact I think I found turning 30 much more difficult. Read the rest of this entry »

Yucky Mummy contributor Leisa starts 2008 with good intentions – and a lock on the pantry door.
It’s time for new year’s resolutions and I am frustrated. Actually it’s not so much time for resolutions, more a time, after the excess of Christmas, to start worrying about my weight and doing something about it. This year I even pre-planned when I would get ‘back on my bike’ and start eating healthily and exercising. I even had Santa deliver me a home trainer for my mountain bike (a stand, to turn my bike into a stationary exercise bike). Read the rest of this entry »

Yucky Mummy contributor Michelle is about to give her friend a priceless gift – the chance to have a baby. Michelle’s story is the first in a series, as she takes the first steps in donating her eggs.
“When I grow up I’m going to be a doctor and have four children”.
Well I am not a doctor, but at age 36 still have dreams of being one – not to mention a foreign correspondent, dancer, builder and the first person to grow wings and fly. I am also very lucky. I have two beautiful children, which is enough.
My best friend from school is an occupational therapist, and has one year left till she’s completed her law degree. She has started up a charity for orphaned children in South Africa. She is also an amazingly generous, gentle, funny, easy-going, unfussy, beautiful woman – who cannot conceive a child with her eggs. Her husband and her have had so many invasive tests for years and years, along with countless miscarriages and IVF treatments, to no avail. Read the rest of this entry »

My baby is all grown up. She starts school in only a few months and we’ve had a little glimpse of what life will be like with a kid going to big school at her kindy orientation during the past couple of weeks. How will we all cope? How are we all going to get out of the house every day? Will she walk to school or will I have to push her in the pram still? Will she be able to cope with attending school every day when she only does one day of pre-school a week now? These are the questions I’ve been asking myself lately. Read the rest of this entry »

First the fall. Then the bike crashing. Then the pained cry. Then the fear flashing across my husband’s face. My walk from one side of the park to the other turns into a run. Welcome to your offspring’s first broken bone. Read the rest of this entry »
